Information and stories about San Francisco coyotes: behavior & personality, coexistence & outreach, by Janet Kessler: Unveiling first-hand just how savvy, social, sentient and singular coyotes really are!
I have really been enjoying your “coyote chronicles”! I grew up in Southern CA and enjoyed watching their antics on my parents’ and cousins’ ranches. I still do when I go to visit. The coyotes in CA are so colorful and have vivid markings. We had a couple on our ranch that resembles black backed jackals with their extensive mantles of silvered black. The coyotes here in TX where I live now are quite drab by comparison – just plain brown with hardly any black or gray to set it off. What’s your opinion of the reports of black coyotes? Do you think they are really coyotes or coyote x redwolf crosses?
Hi Lisa —
Thank you so much for your input! I’m glad you like my “coyote chronicles”! Yes, coyote antics are super fun to watch and very interesting — that is why I became enamored of them.
My viewings have been limited to urban coyotes in the San Francisco Bay Area. This way I can concentrate on individuals and individualistic behavior, and I avoid the “generalizations” which never really capture the reality. But because of this approach I have not been looking at the broader picture.
So I do not know about your black coyotes, though I went to the web and saw a couple — they are gorgeous! The only “black” coyotes I know about are those that have developed mange and lost all their fur. One such famous coyote, Rosie Coyote, was taken by her community and nursed to health. But this is a totally different story.
If you want, you may submit your own observations to be posted, if you think these might be interesting or might help people understand this often maligned animal. And if you find out more about your black coyotes, that, too, might be interesting to post, if you would like to do so. Janet
