Yes, you are absolutely right: I should have looked more closely at the ears! And I also should have noticed the very large cheek pockets. The half-moon mound of dirt around the burrow opening isn’t there, but maybe it is not always present. Thank you! I have changed the posting! Janet

I’m wondering if the animal is a pocket gopher, not a vole? I saw one on Twin Peaks that was popping in and out its burrow right at the feet of throngs of tourists.

(Not that it changes the point at all, of course… it’s been a good year for both gophers and voles, and they’re probably both over-bold.)
