Information and stories about San Francisco coyotes: behavior & personality, coexistence & outreach, by Janet Kessler: Unveiling first-hand just how savvy, social, sentient and singular coyotes really are!
I have heard coyotes howl at all times of night, and at all times of the day — there is no specific time for a coyote to howl. However, there is almost always a reason behind the howl. I’ve heard them howl or bark when they’ve been chased by dogs — this is very upsetting to them. I’ve heard them howl in response to fire-engine sirens — as if they were responding to a coyote group call. I’ve heard two coyotes howl back and forth, taking turns. So the howling can serve to warn off other animals as well as to communicate over longer distances. Howls come as barks, howls and squeals. I’ve heard the squeals of delight when they greet each other and also in response to sirens. And I’ve heard the howls go on howling, squealing or barking for over 20 minutes at a time!
