Hello Janet.
A new case I’ve never experienced with LGD and coyote.
A Maremma x Pyr cross was raised with milk goats and free range chickens to dissuade coyote. It’s a small operation, about 20 acres. As he grew, he literally filled in to the job at 147lbs of lean watchfulness. They never had issues with goats but chickens were nabbed regularly.
In his 1st year…he chased coyote several times and chicken raids nearly stopped. They also noticed..via cams and video..one coyote seemed to literally almost play with him at outskirts. It was brief and seemed almost suicidal but the coyote would leave and LGD come back..buoyant. Like he was indeed almost playing.
Fast fwd another year. And they realized the pattern. There is ONE PARTICULAR FEMALE that arrives every 2 weeks or so..and literally grabs a chicken..in full view and allowance of LGD. No other coyote are allowed in. He has dispatched 3 that dared come in. But this female…has his allowance and friendship. It just shows..how little we know. It’s likely a one off and aberrant. But somehow..an LGD and one female coyote have an accord..and even a friendship. He will be paired with an older female to reinforce proper relationships says owners.
I haven’t an explanation how that female befriended him. But she has had 2 years of chicken dinners. Take care…
Lou
